Many parents find themselves struggling with their own sleep due to their baby's nighttime battles. While this exhaustion is nothing new, now there is professional assistance available, and it's right around the corner. Amy Douglas, a Certified Infant/Toddler Sleep Consultant has launched Sleep Baby Consulting (www.sleepybabyconsulting.com) to provide in-home consultations to local residents in Central Ohio, and also to offer video and phone conferencing to relieve parents across the US.
Douglas launched the Sleep Baby business last October after receiving her accreditation and after having worked successfully with over twenty families from Texas USA to Melbourne, Australia. She is certified by the International Maternity & Parenting Institute and is a member of the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants. Additionally, Douglas has first hand knowledge of what sleep deprivation feels like.
"I've been there myself,” she relates in a calm manner. “I had a baby that just wouldn't sleep, day or night. At the time, I was overjoyed to find there are people out there that help babies and families get the sleep they need. It is very gratifying to now be one of those people."
Techniques such as Crying-It-Out, have been practiced for years, and often seem like an effective way to teach the child it’s time to sleep. While some may respond well to this sleep intervention, this is not optimal for many parents and children alike. Sleep training, or sleep shaping, as Douglas likes to call it, cannot be lumped into one single approach, as there are various other methods. Sure, there will be tears, but you can comfort your child during the process of sleep training, without leaving them to deal with it alone.
Besides being educated in newborn care, sleep support, and the science of sleep, Douglas takes a holistic approach to look at the big picture and fully comprehend each child’s distinctive needs. “Birth history, sleep environment, nutritional needs, routines, and various other components can play an important role within sleep”, says Douglas. “Once working with me, it’s typical for a little one to sleep through the night within 4 – 5 days. I’m no Mary Poppins, but I am successful at what I do because I understand that each child has a unique story”.
